The Balancing Act

What is the matter with our country? As I am soon going to be swallowed into the realms of the judicial system, I feel what is happening in Chennai is wrong and that, the advocates should get back to work. Protests can be made in a more refined, calculated and orderly way. Resorting to physical violence is not the answer. The fact that ADVOCATES set a police station on fire is appalling. The country would be better off if the judiciary just concentrated on dealing with cases before it. With a sky rocketing number of cases still pending, disposing them and moving on, on one hand and simultaneously voicing their support for a “just cause” by way of a petition is a far better way of achieving their goals. Their current portrayal as hooligans is only going to make the general public lose its faith in the judiciary all over again. I have been battling between what I should finally get into, should I join the corporate sector when recession is around or should I join litigation when the cou

Why?

Today has been a weird day of sorts. My teacher responsible for me choosing law, the woman who encouraged me into taking up public speaking, one of the very few teachers in school who always saw my brother and me as individuals and not as an extension of the other has turned herself in at a rehab center. She is schizophrenic. It is so terrible that circumstances have forced her into this condition. I met her last on 30.10.2008. She seemed fine and I had no clue about what she was going through. I knew she had some family problems. Never knew that it would escalate to her turning herself in like this. It’s so strange that when you hear something of this sort you start remembering some of the worst things you thought you’d managed to lock away in your mind. How is it that the mind can recall all the terrible episodes with such accuracy and detail? I’m trying to remember the first comic I ever read and it’s just not coming to me.

Fenny Chronicles - The Guardian

Guardian Angels are consistent, insistent, and persistent. Fenny and I have established a very strong connection and when either of us is in a mess we look at the other for support. When Fenny has been up to no good and is discovered, she comes running straight up to my room and then she knows I’ll put things right. When my parents and I get into an argument Fenny very vocally supports me. When I tell her not to talk to someone, she doesn’t go near them or look at them :) The same applies to me, I can’t pet any other dog. She will just sniff out all the evidence and sulk for more than 2 days and then finally make up. There have been times when Fenny and I have sulked for the same reason and we sit together and sulk. There is no pulling us out of sulk mode when we display such solidarity. She hates it when anybody touches things that belong to me. It could be my bag, phone anything. She has the right to drool on and chew my possessions but no one else can enjoy such liberty. Once when m

Murderers and Perverts

I woke this morning with a lot going on in my head. There were certain things that had my mind preoccupied. I had decided sometime last year that I would not use the ring road anymore. But I have fallen back into the routine of going via ring road. Today I saw a couple of losers right in front of me going at an abnormally slow pace and then when I over took them they decided to overtake me in this process there was a dog right in the middle of the road and these morons ran over it. Ring Road being a pretty busy road I couldn't stop and turn around, I took my vehicle to the side lane stopped, tried to control the involuntary trembling and got on my vehicle and drove toward the college. I knew I was already late for the first hour so I decided to take my time and went slowly. When I was getting close to college I saw a very perverted grandpa troubling a school boy. I stopped got my phone out and asked grandpa if he'd like to meet some special people. That was enough to scare aw

Fenny Chronicles - Our Best Friend

My best friend Chaitra came home when I told her we’d got Fenny. She knew how much I had been longing for a puppy. She is not a dog lover but she is not a dog hater either. So she came home and saw the tiny cuddly puppy and actually pet her. (Now before I tell you more about Fenny and Chaitra, I must mention that Chaitra is a cat lover and had never pet any dog before Fenny.) That moment on Fenny and Chaitra became best friends too. Fenny enjoyed Chaitra’s visits to our place. Once she actually climbed on her kinetic ready to take off with her. (Made me so jealous) Fenny had found herself a best friend too, she awarded my friend with several attempts to lick her face, jumping on her, spinning her tail when just being glanced at and being pet by her. When she calls up she asks about Fenny and her misadventures and has always made it a point to visit Fenny. Till recently I hadn’t realized how strong a bond had grown between these two. I’d be speaking both for Fenny and me when I say,

Fenny Chronicles- The Helper Puppy

Within months of having Fenny at home, she knew that we all lived by a routine and she used to enjoy watching each one of us do our work. Like my mom, she used to hang the washed clothes to dry on the clothes line and get them in at evening once they were dry. Fenny decided that she had to help my mom. So one evening she started pulling down the clothes (the ones she could reach) one by one. Before she knew it she was drowning in a bundle of clothes. My mom hearing the strange sounds from our court yard decided to check, only to find a bundle of clothes rolling on the ground and a very black tail peeping out from one end of the bundle. Good intentions with bad execution usually got Fenny into a LOT of trouble with my parents. One day my dad was cutting some leaves from the garden patch for the kitchen. Fenny was out with him and she saw him busy uprooting these leaves. Having collected enough leaves my dad came inside. These leaves are used to prepare a delicacy, and were very careful

Fenny Chronicles - Teething

Teething: this is a phase all pet lovers dread. As much as you love your pet, you do wish they wouldn’t use your favorite blanket as a chew toy and make a hole right in the middle of it or bite your slippers beyond recognition, or chew on your books. Fenny is a small dog. Unlike other Labradors she is not huge. She was the runt of the litter. She is the tinniest of her siblings. For a tiny dog she used to set herself huge goals. I had once caught her chewing my French notebook, but as I was right there to rescue it, not much damage was done. Since then I used to keep my books beyond her reach. One day I had left my book on the coffee table, when I came into the hall I saw my little monster trying her best to get her paws on the table. She jumped many a times but she only got her nails on the table. So she went under the table, looked like she was figuring out another plan to get to my book. 5 minutes later she was circling the table. Finally she decided she’ll use the support of one

Fenny Chronicles - Why have a pet?

We must all ask ourselves this before we get a pet. Everyone who lives in an illusion thinking bringing up a pet is easy, welcome to reality. I am now a self proclaimed expert on pets from ants, fishes, snails, bugs to dogs. Remember that you will definitely out live your pet, so be ready for an emotional rollercoaster. Anyone who thinks they’ll get a pet and yet be detached is fooling himself or is someone who just lost his heart to Satan. This blog is inspired by a very recent incident which confirmed my reasons for wanting a pet. When I was 17, I wanted a pet because I thought I needed to have someone who would help me understand myself better. Someone that I could tell about everything in my mind not worrying that there was any possibility of it ever falling on anyone else’s ears. Someone who wouldn’t judge me and be glad to know me and be in my company. Well I got what I wanted- a little black Labrador puppy. Day one was a nightmare. She came home on April 1st and she was to stay

Dev D

Dev D, a true modern day adaptation. This unlike Bansali’s epic costing 50 Lakhs or crores (No idea) has more to boast about like the cast and Patna ke Presley’s and the way the story is put before the audience. This definitely is not a “family movie”. Like the original story it has the same central Characters Dev, Paro and Chandramukhi. Everything goes pretty much the way Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay wrote in the book, except for the fact that it has a modern twist. Dev not only drinks but also snorts cocaine, swallows down ecstasy and has a major attitude problem. Paro is anything but mild. Chandramukhi gives a whole new meaning to attitude. After a certain point you stop comparing the Devdas starring SRK with the movie playing on the screen, because you are thanking god that there aren’t any dance sequences that run for over 8 minutes of your precious time and there is no incessant stammering or hic after a gulp of the liquid from the bottle. The movie high lights two things (a) Ti
