Saas v Reality TV

A lady who once came to know fame from a daily running soap that ran for god knows how many years made her appearance on a News channel today to give her views on Reality TV shows like Rakhi ka Insaaf and Bigg Boss. She said, “ Shows that are evocative, provocative should not be aired and that channels should not air such shows just to increase their TRP ratings.”

Well once upon a time she played the role of a Damsel in distress who ended up crying her whole life. Married her own husband twice. Remained a righteous creature for whom suffering was equivalent to happiness. This woman managed to tell Indian women that you must accept your husband no matter what. Even if he marries someone else and returns back to you, you take him in. Your daughter gets raped get her married to the rapist. Better still when the media goes “Gosh, the soap is painting the wrong picture.” Get this righteous woman to take a gun in her hand and shoot at her own son in law after having gotten her daughter married to him. The audience loves the violent spineless woman who shoots her evil son in law.

Today the very same woman is talking about what children must see and what they must not see. Pot calling the kettle black? I presume she thought it alright for children to watch women being abused, men marrying thrice, violence, dead people returning back to life as a part of a very educative session on a daily basis. Why do I care so much about what she has to say about reality shows? I don’t care about her opinion; neither do I respect people who think they were a part of television history because they portrayed a wuss of a woman. I just want to refresh people’s memory as to what she was a part of. Does she have a right to comment on what is being aired on TV when she herself has managed to cause enough Indian women to think that suffering is the key to happiness?

I don’t support reality TV either. Who really cares what a bunch of people do living in a house with cameras following their every move? Honestly watching Bigg Boss is fun. Because when you have a crappy day and you see a bunch of people acting like perfect retards and screaming and fighting over food you send a prayer and thank the lord you had such a brilliant day. It showcases how long it takes to destroy a memory or distort an incident or exaggerate a comment. For everyone who likes being specific, to the point and brutally honest this show only makes an interesting subject.

Then again if I did not have a TV I wouldn’t really be missing out on much. I’d still find enough things around me to keep me interested and away from all the horrors of the world that people invite into their homes the moment they switch on their Idiot Box. Aptly named eh?
